Incarceration and Inmate Search
When you need to know whether a person is publicly listed as incarcerated or where they are being held, the strongest sources are usually the responsible correctional agency, federal inmate locator, state department of corrections, or county jail roster.
Search by custody level
Federal prisons, state prisons, county jails, detention centers, and local holding facilities may use separate systems. Knowing the likely jurisdiction can dramatically narrow the search.
Use multiple identity fields
Full name, age or birth year, register or inmate number, sentencing jurisdiction, and prior location can help distinguish people with similar names.
Custody data changes
Transfers, releases, temporary holds, and processing delays can make one source stale. Treat the most recent official custody source as more authoritative than older secondary listings.
Distinguish custody from conviction
Being listed in a jail or detention system does not by itself establish guilt or a final conviction. Public custody information should be described accurately and separately from the underlying case disposition.
