Jurisdiction-Specific Legal Research

Legal research becomes much more useful once the governing jurisdiction is identified. LegalWhat is designed to narrow statutes, cases, rules, forms, and procedures to the legal system that actually applies to the user’s problem.

Start Legal Research

Identify more than the state

State law may be only one layer. Federal circuit, district court, county, municipality, agency, tribal jurisdiction, or specialty court can also affect the applicable authority.

Separate controlling from persuasive sources

A well-written case from another jurisdiction may explain an issue but not control the result. Research should label that distinction instead of presenting all authority as equivalent.

Use local rules for procedure

Court and agency procedure can turn on local requirements that do not appear in the general statute. Filing methods, formatting, page limits, hearings, notices, and service rules may all require separate research.

Update the jurisdiction if the user corrects it

When the user provides a more specific or corrected jurisdiction, the research should follow the user’s current facts rather than preserve an earlier assumption.
