Legal Answers by State and Jurisdiction

A legal answer is only as useful as its jurisdiction. The same factual problem can be governed by different statutes, court rules, cases, forms, deadlines, and procedures depending on where the matter arises.

Ask a Legal Question

State is the starting point

State law controls many common legal issues, but federal law, tribal law, municipal ordinances, and agency rules may also apply depending on the subject.

Courts have their own rules

Federal districts, state trial courts, appellate courts, bankruptcy courts, and local courts can have procedural requirements that are not obvious from the substantive statute.

Agencies may use separate procedures

Benefits, licensing, employment, immigration, tax, administrative, and regulatory matters may involve agency-specific deadlines, forms, appeal rights, and hearing procedures.

Update the answer when the jurisdiction changes

If the user corrects the state, county, court, or agency, the research should immediately follow the corrected jurisdiction rather than preserving the earlier assumption.
